Throughout the beige landscape of west Texas, spring brings pops of color to the desert. After the cool spring rain falls, cacti and wildflowers bloom and bees and hummingbirds go to work.
We visited the Chihuahuan Desert near Fort Davis mid April, following a heavy rain (heavy for the desert anyway). We encountered numerous blooms and even an incredible cactus greenhouse where each is meticulously labeled.
We even had the benefit of nice weather while visiting Monahans Sandhills State Park where we rented a sand disk and barreled down the sandhills. It was so much fun!
We hope you enjoy some of the snapshots from our travels.
The Indian Lodge is an oasis nestled in Davis Mountains State Park located in Fort Davis, Texas. Here you'll find hiking trails, the darkest of night skies, and mountain tranquility.
Spending the day at Balmorhea State Park in the cool San Soloman Springs is the most relaxing I've ever felt. I can't put it into words. After hiking the Davis Mountains, my feet were tired. My back ached. While there, this pool made all those woes disappear, along with all my anxiety, worry, fears. Feeling the breeze on your face as you plunge into the fish-filled turquoise waters is like nothing else.
Underwater photos were taken with a waterproof disposable camera purchased at the gift shop.

A far-flung oasis in the desert, Alpine is a college town. Home of Sul Ross, Alpine has exactly what you'd expect–record stores, coffee shops, restaurants, etc.
A great home-base for those traveling to Big Bend, stand-outs include hiking up Hancock Hill behind Sul Ross to write your name in the notebook at The Desk, eating a snow cone at Murphy St. Raspa Co., walking around town to see the murals, swimming at the Maverick Inn, and dining at the Reata.
